Malaysian airline shot down by 'Buk' missile system, verified in possession of pro-Russian militants

Following today’s tragic news that a Malaysian airliner carrying 295 passengers had crashed in eastern Ukraine, Interior Ministry advisor Anton Herashchenko stated that the plane was in fact hit by a Buk surface-to-air missile (SAM) launcher. Buk SAM systems can fire missiles up to an altitude of 22,000 meters (72,000 feet).

Reports indicate that the plane has crashed in the town of Hrabove, Donetsk region, which is near the occupied towns of Snizhne and city of Torez. Both locales are roughly 20km from the crash site in Hrabove.

Do Russian insurgents have access to these missile systems?

Security and Defense Council spokesperson Andriy Lysenko informed that near Snizhne a Buk SAM was seen not belonging to the Ukrainian army. The presence of a Buk-type SAM in the town was verified by Associated Press journalists earlier Thursday.

Russian terrorist Igor “Strelkov” Girkin admitted that they had shot down a plane today over the city of Torez, but have claimed it to be a similarly large Antonov An-26 transport aircraft.
”In the vicinity of Torez, we just downed a plane, an AN-26. It is lying somewhere in the Progress Mine. We have issued warnings not to fly in our airspace. We have video confirming. The bird fell on a waste heap. Residential areas were not hit. Civilians were not injured,” he was quoted.
While Girkin issued a statement saying that they shot down the “transport aircraft,” he later denied having weaponry to take down the Boeing 777 at that altitude.

Despite denials to the contrary, on June 29 press service representatives of Girkin’s “Donetsk People’s Republic” organization told Russia’s ITAR-TASS that they had “taken control” of multiple Buk missile defense systems.

The U.S. Department of State has said this week that more advanced air defense systems are beginning to arrive to deployment sites which have then been transferring equipment from Russia to its proxies in Ukraine. Also, the DoS notes that Russian insurgents have been actively looking to recruit volunteers with experience operating heavy weapons such as air defenses.

Taken together, it appears abundantly clear that insurgents have access to, and use Buk SAMs and have openly admitted to engaging aircraft with them.

1. The BUK missile could have been fired/operated from Russia close to the border like the GRADS.

1. Satellites and other forms of observation will show the location of the ugly BUK missile machine both before and after the strike.

2. Mat, the plane was more than 22000 feet, it was said 33.000 feet) and check this new. We have the software showing all these data. Either way it is Russian origin.

1. I will check it and reply. Cannot think straight right now since we spoke about it with the flight radar service yesterday and it happened today.

1. There must be a lot of russians and chechens there for them to have someone actually hanging out around a SAM site to shoot down any planes. Either that or the russians and chechens are running out of girls to gang rape there, so back to their weapons.

2. It’s not a surprise but it was a very foolish move because now absolutely no one in the world will believe whatever is found after the Russians snared the box.

I suspect there won’t be anything there in this case because it does seem as if the pilots had absolutely no idea of what was coming.

In this situation and in that particular geographical spot there was bound to be surveillance of a serious sort going on and not controlled by Putin.

3. I swear, between russians and muslims, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” isn’t just a movie.
It’s becoming a documentary.

4. There has to be extensive satellite activity going on over that area. Smart thing to do would be to let International aviation professionals do their jobs. There will be tons of data here that wasn’t available on the previous Malaysian plane that went missing.

Best thing for all to do is wait and it does take them time to get to the bottom of things so be patient and very supportive of families who have lost people in this awful occurrence.

1. “Smart thing to do would be to let International aviation professionals do their jobs.”

Are you high or some UN official or something? Russia has been doing a “chechnya” on Ukraine. Let who do what? Those apes will shoot you dead if you try to get it, or anything else they don’t want you to have.

You are aware of all the kidnappings going on in Chechnya, Dagestan, Georgia/Ossetia, Crimea, and Ukraine, no?

1. I am very aware of what you are referring to but I do think the people on the ground who let that missile be fired screwed up big time when they showed up at the scene and then tampered with it. They were photographed and Strelkov and friends voices were taped.

If anything this sets back Putin’s attempt to grab Ukraine because now people are really paying much more attention to what is and has been going on and now will follow things more closely.

The world in general is not in favor of Putin’s or ISIS’s methodology and that includes China which traditionally has not been in the land grabbing business though I am aware of what is happening near Japan. Putin has put himself at the top of the world’s ugliest people list because it is now finally being discussed: he has supported both with arms and soldiers the incursions into Ukraine. And he stole Crimea. It will be hard for him to get back the tenuous standing he had before he expanded even further into fantasy land. That Empire he wants to “restore” is moving away from him rapidly.

1. The savages had to go to the crime scene because they needed information on what it was. If there’s valuable intelligence on the plane, you get it. Or gear. Plus, it’s part of claiming “the prize”.

People cannot approve of what putin’s doing, but putin is the rat king of russia and the little rat has a big head, so I don’t think he’s too concerned about getting back any goodwill. russians have only understood force and he’s the stereotype russia.

1. I was describing in a US paper what those separatists in the photos looked like to me. We had a cat when I was a kid and if he got out he would hunt and kill birds and then proudly strut home and put them on the front door mat. He didn’t kill them to eat them but he was obviously thrilled while the humans around him were horrified.

Putin realistically does have to be concerned about the isolation this will bring to his fantasy land. Right now Russia is one big gas station and in order to develop and thrive it needs to understand it is an equal – not a superior – in the world’s deck of cards. That applies to the US, too, but right now the focus is on this incredible disaster caused by a man who thinks he can rule with a iron hand. He may be in for some surprises.

2. Hopefully the little neo-soviet rat putin will wake up, but like obama, I think he’s mentally challenged due to his background.

When the US made a processed chicken deal with the vermin in russia, those apes honestly thought the USA would have chicken plants for the USA and the bad chickens would be processed at another plant and given to the russians. So part of the deal was that the USA had to pay to have some of the russian baboons come to the USA and be in the plants to make sure that “good chickens for USA, bad chickens for rUssIa” didn’t happen.

russia has become so retarded in their culture, the development of culture, society, and thought in russia has retarded back to that of little more than troupes of baboons. Since 1917, russia has been devolving.

Churchill was right:
https://www.winstonchurchill.org/support/the-churchill-centre/publications/finest-hour-online/725-the-creeds-of-the-devil-churchill-between-the-two-totalitarianisms-1917-1945

2. The Kadyrov chechens and Moscow potato-beetles already stole MH17s black boxes and sent them to ‘mother’ Russia…as they also have sent 20,000 Ukrainian orphans ‘for their safety’ to Russland; and abducted Colonel Savchenko, no doubt ‘for her safety’ as well 😛

1. It will be interesting to see if all those bus loads of Ukrainian children ever surface, but wherever russians show up, thousands, tens of thousands of people wind up missing.
Humans and russians should never be in the same area.

3. llewellynh…It usually takes the aviation people years to figure out what happened. Ukraine doesn’t have that much time. Putin already lying and blaming Ukraine…also gives him an excuse to invade.

5. Man oh man, what utter foolishness. Mr Putin, I bet you and your paranoid colleagues did not think that this scenario could have happened. Giving such dangerous weapons to the terrorists is utter folly. My worry now is somehow, the Kremlin will lie again and blame the Ukrainians for this. In fact, I’m sure that they will.

1. Or they just don’t care. Putin’s almost wiped the capital of Chechnya, Grozny off the map, set up and invaded Georgia, invaded and took over Crimea…

And no one in the world did anything and barely noticed.
Old (western) europe is on their knees servicing him so he doesn’t turn off their gas.
The disgusting french are making millions off of him.
And he can keep arming iran to drain Israel and the USA.
And obama concentrates on gays, mexicans, and avoiding his ugly, angry wife.

The only thing that can save civilized countries around russia and the only hope for humans is to be heavily armed and trained…and willing to do violence.
Those are the only things that have ever stopped the russian primates in their baboon like spread of their colony.

1. Milton…you are so right. It happened in WW2 everyone sat around and waited befor they did anything and 20 million people died. Here we go again. Putin and his regime and a lot of his people are crazy. Dangerous to the entire world. Putin wants to get America so Americans better get with it.

1. America isn’t going to be able to recover from all the costs of the illegals. Who is going to pay for the pig putin will be countries around russia and europe. And what’s funny is they don’t want to do anything and have not wanted to do much to protect themselves.
And they don’t want their people to have firearms like we do in the USA.

1. You’re off topic. If you don’t want to be seen as a troll, then don’t shift the thread to a different topic. You’re boring.

2. Actually all of what Sandy and I are talking about goes with the flow of the world’s response, or lack thereof, to putin and this latest putin-event.

If you can’t keep up, you might want to just skip over things or you may indeed become bored in trying to figure out what people are talking about.

6. These black boxes should have been in control of the Ukr. authorities and sent to the west to ensure no shenanigans.

1. And if it’s in the area of the russian or chechen child molesters, that’s not going to happen.

1. Civvie airlines I doubt would record incoming missiles, so there wouldn’t be anything on it but the location it was at when the russian and chechen pedophiles shot it down.

7. Just as I suspected. Go to: http://rt.com/news/ You will see the quote below, and also that Putin’s jet was in the same area around the same time. How’s that for a start to manipulating the truth. I have to give it to Moscow: they are masters at deception. Ukraine has to be very forceful and direct here. Immediately insist on open access to our military to observers from the UN/NATO/EU to disprove any supposed links to our side here. It will be crucial for world opinion! I’m afraid I know exactly what’s going to be on the national newscasts in the west tonight: Reports from Moscow, seeding doubts, and implying Ukraine in the affair.
Kiev deployed powerful surface-to-air missile systems to E. Ukraine ahead of the Malaysian plane crash – reportsThe Ukrainian military reportedly deployed a battery of Buk surface-to-air missile systems, capable of bringing down high-flying jets, to the Donetsk region the day before the Malaysian passenger plane crashed in the area.

1. I think world opinion is on your side already and to point fingers is to sink really to his level. Science in this investigation will rule the day.

They STOLE the black box and that is the ultimate No-No. Thorough scientific investigation is what is coming and it will be impartial and deadly accurate. Certainly there was heavy surveillance of that area going on and that information and the tapes Kiev has added to the theft of the black box are only going to point one way.

If the Separatists even shot the missile off is questionable. It takes training that they may just not have had and that would then point to just who would have known how to do what was done. Russians have been walking through that border area for months now and not always in Greenie uniforms.

Russia is seeding doubts but this time they went too far and it is the rara avis that is falling for any of his nazi-referenced stories.

If he was smart, he would tell the truth. I think that is beyond his reach and so he has truly shot himself in the foot this time.

8. Doesn’t this thing, or its fire control center, have an IFF mode to tell friend from foe? If this Buk, or its FC, was a newer model, it should be equipped with modern communications equipment so it knows what its shooting at. At any rate, can’t wait to hear the official explaination from Russia. Of course who knows if it will be the truth.

1. Jack–no the SA11 and SA17 have no IFF recognition hardware, or software eh Source :Global Security website

2. Official russian explanation:
“It was the kyiv junta of nazis using nato weapons with electricity paid for by the imf to take away all my dreams of being the King of Gas of the world”.

3. Dear jack….Russia doesn’t know who to tell the truth. Why would you even want to wait? They’ve already started lying. Now they’re just trying to figure out how to fix the black box so Ukraine can be blamed.

1. Війна може бути війною, але нам треба перемогти ворогів війни, щоб звільнитися від хвороби.

War may be a war, but we have to defeat the enemies of war to get rid of the disease.

2. He has to wait for internationals to finish cleaning up the crash site; then he can mop up the terrorists.

9. A banner headline on NHK World TV in Tokyo, Japan said that Putin blamed the downing of the jet on Ukraine. Lets hope he gets his just desserts.

1. Since 1917, russia has been de-evolving into little more than troupes of ignorant baboons and continues up to today.
Churchill was right, in 1918 and also, here from 1929:

[To the East of Poland] lay the huge mass of Russia—not a wounded Russia
only, but a poisoned Russia, an infected Russia, a plague-bearing
Russia, a Russia of armed hordes not only smiting with bayonet and with
cannon, but accompanied and preceded by swarms of typhus-bearing vermin
which slew the bodies of men, and political doctrines which destroyed
the health and even the souls of nations.

10. Putin’s reply that the country in which this plane crashed is responsible for the plane crash is illogical. It does not follow, for example, that the owners of a house are responsible if a dead man is found in that house. One needs to prove that the owners of the house had anything to do with the death of the dead man. But if we were to take Putin at his word, we see that the plane recorder (black box) is now being shipped to Moscow (out of the Ukraine)?! How is this consistent with Putin’s statement that the country in which the plane crashed is responsible for obtaining all the evidence and data necessary (at the scene of the crime or crash) in order to vindicate or defend itself?! Obviously, the guilty party wishes to grab the black box and tamper with the evidence before the truth is confirmed. And what is the truth? Well, in this case it is almost too simplistic to prove: Ukraine has no anti-aircraft guns in place at the time of the crash. Russian TV announced almost simultaneously with the crash of the plane that the Russian terrorists had successfully shot down an Air Ukraine plane. But the plane shot down was not an Air Ukraine plane after all (no such plane was in the sky at the time) but a Malaysian Airlines plane carrying 295 people on board none of whom were Ukrainians! Now, Ukraine has agreed to an International Investigation of this International Airlines crash (shot down by the Russian terrorists without a doubt). The USA has also been invited to be present and no doubt permission will be given for the USA Air Force to monitor the air space above the entire Eastern Ukraine with the permission to take out any aggressive action either by Russia or the Russian terrorist within Ukrainian air space. Russia cannot complain one whit about the intervention of NATO and USA troops (especially, British troops–whose citizens were killed in this crash), as this was an aggressive attack by Russian forces (whether in Russian uniform or not!) and therefore warrants a full-blown investigation that will take weeks if not months to piece together. Meanwhile, all Russian terrorists forces will be ordered to surrender their weapons and submit to the trials and verdicts of an International Tribunal. Failure to do so will incur their death and destruction. Russian troops near the border will be ordered to withdraw as NATO and USA troops will surround the entire Crimean peninsula and be prepared to take out all the Russian troops there should the provoke a military attack to this International Investigation. Although it is truly sad that 295 non-Russian, non-Ukrainian citizens had to lose their lives in order for this International Armed Intervention to occur in Ukraine, it is a veritable god-send to the Ukrainian efforts to rid Ukraine of these heavily armed and fortified Russian invaders. May God bless the United States of America! May God Bless Great Britain and the EU nations! May God bless the NATO forces soon to enter into this theatre of war to keep Russian terrorist forces at bay and to show to Putin that free-nations can stick together in time of crisis! Russian troops (whether in uniform or not) in the Ukraine are soon to be sent home one way or the other! God Bless Ukraine! God bless a FREE Ukraine for ever!

1. Don’t see the US becoming as involved as we should. We didn’t stop ISIS when we could have and don’t seem to remember that President Clinton and Prime Minister Tony Blair signed a piece of paper saying that in exchange for that huge Ukrainian nuclear stockpile we would take on their defense. It’s a sad picture but something will be done but probably not led by the US.

1. The civilized world should be arming the Ukrainians with weapons, weapons and more weapons, and other goodies to fight terrorists.
Armed drones would be outstanding.

Azov Battalion may turn into a much larger, much more multi-national unit also if the russians keep trying to turn Ukraine into Chechnya or Georgia.

1. I don’t disagree and because the US military is being cut back quickly and severely I don’t see why we can’t “lend” all sorts of things to the Ukrainian government and military.

For too long in the US and UK, Russian propaganda machines have hit the internet and it was getting to the point where Ukraine wasn’t getting mentioned without the word “Nazi” attached to it.

This horror we are watching now gives the Ukraine the air time and spotlight to explain that it is anything but a Nazi nation and that a tiny minority of kooks have been using murder to force the majority to give up on democracy.

And those same kooks were supported with equipment, soldiers and money but the Land Grabber, Putin.

1. Thanks so much for the list. I already do read some of them more than once a day but now you have given me an excuse to do less housework!

2. You’re welcome. I keep that to disseminate it every once in a while to let people know there’s other sources of information besides putin owned rt/moscowtimes/rianovosti/lifenews, etc.

2. llewellynh…who else will help? Australia, Canada, east european countries get together real quick. Germany and France sick…

2. It is not a God send it’s a tragedy, 300 innocent lives lost in a moment and countless grieving family members. Shame on Europe for letting it come to something like this to finally open their eyes and even that is a big if!

1. I haven’t heard a word from those Europeans. they’re greedy, cowardly scum. Boycott all German cars and French products. Let them go to hell and burn with their Putler.

11. My condolences to the 298 innocent citizens of the world, who were massacred. Their deaths are just as tragic as they many innocent Ukrainian citizens being butchered, kidnapped, persecuted by Putin’s hired thugs and criminals. Is this what he meant when he said his armed forces will used citizens as shields?

Hopefully this wakes up the Putin-pologists in Germany and France that insist they can still ‘do business’ with Russia by supplying them with French Mistral ships and advanced German military technology. Initial reports have at least 4 German and 4 French citizens on board this plane, so Comrade Hollande and Frau Ribbentrop are now complicit in supplying weaponry to the Russia, which backs these terrorists.
The families of their citizens should include the French and German military companies that willfully supplied any hardware for this missile systems in their wrongful death suits so that these businesses will learn not to put profit before the lives of innocent citizens.

12. This was the act of a desperate leader.Putin is a cop not a soldier, his flawed strategy has failed and he needs a ceasefire. The cowardly French and the backstabbing Germans are all to eagar to give it him.Petro must continue the attack and be more harsh and stop worrying about civilians. The Bolshevik criminals must be annihilated.

13. In the beginning of the week media reported an Antonov flying at 6500 meters was shot down by a rocket in the same region. After such a serious incident Kiev blamed Russia, saying the rebels do not have the necessary weapons to do so. However, there was a clear risk rebel fighters indeed do have the equipment, so why were civil airliners still allowed to fly there? Why did the aviation authorities did not take this incident serious?

14. Most likely option is that rebels used Ukrainian rockets and made a mistake. If true then Russia has nothing to do with it: the weapons were Ukrainian (and Ukraine thus lied when it claimed the rebels did not take such rockets from them) and the rebels are clearly not highly skilled Russian professionals.

1. If the operators are Russian military / special forces, or received training from Russia in order to shoot down planes in Ukraine, they are still accountable.

So far there isn’t any evidence that the Buk launchers came from Ukraine, but there is satellite evidence seeing them at the Rostov deployment site which has sent tanks into Ukraine. It’s increasingly looking like it was Russian-made and Russian-operated.

15. In the beginning of the week media reported an Antonov flying at 6500 meters was shot down by a rocket in the same region. After such a serious incident Kiev blamed Russia, saying the anti-Kiev do not have the necessary weapons to do so. However, there was a clear risk anti-Kiev fighters indeed do have the equipment, so why were civil airliners still allowed to fly there?

1. Unfortunately, we’re all talking to ourselves here. We should be on The Beast but especially HuffingtonPost World News they are particularily anti-Ukrainian and all the Putin trolls are on those sites. Lots of American read those sites. Very few of us there correcting misinformation. Damn this site is hard to type on when will they fix it?

16. This isn’t the 1st civilian aircraft that Moscow has taken out, either directly or throught their proxies. That bastard “Strelkov” first bragged about taking out a large aircraft, then he and his Russian master’s try and backtrack and blame Ukraine. They are all bastards and need to be taken out back and summarily executed, from the top down to the person who targeted the aircraft. It’s a fucking war crime! Слава Україні!

17. Walter you’re absolutely right? I keep asking why all these media continue to give space to Russian lies. Are they stupid or in bed with Putin…getting paid. I don’t understand it. It’s disgusting. AP and reuters are anti-Ukrainian in the way they nuance their stories.

18. Dear…I think you give media and most people too much credit I’ve been all over the internet, TV news still pretend like it’s a civil war in Ukraine and always let Russia have their say first.

19. May I also take the time to mention the deaths of over 100 people heading to the International AIDS conference in Melbourne, all on that flight?

Their work saved millions of lives long before this conflict began, and now the community fighting the worldwide HIV epidemic will have to pick up the pieces after their bodies are buried.

20. — Russia Today posted this article, http://rt.com/news/173784-ukraine-plane-malaysian-russia/ claiming that a Ukrainian BUK SAM system was operating near Styla, 30km south of Donetsk, and that radiation from the radar was detected by Russian equipment.

— The crash site (link below), as well as the approximate flight path of flight MH-17, is approximately 95-105km from Styla.

— The maximum range of the BUK-MI missile system is 42km (see ‘basic missile specifications in the Wikipedia article.)

–Therefore, even if there was a Ukrainian BUK-M1 system where RT claims, it couldn’t have launched the missile. They might claim that the missile battery was detached from the radar system, and was 60km closer to the flight path, would mean that the missile system was somewhere in the Khartyszk area of Donetsk. This, of course, is absurd, considering that the separatists still control Donetsk.
