Turkey Warns Russia it Will Blockade Bosphorus if Violence Occurs

According to diplomatic sources, Turkey has threatened Russia with a blockade of the Bosphorus Strait

The threat to close the Bosphorus to Russia comes from a report by Hvylya, citing a Turkish diplomatic source. According to the source, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan yesterday spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the phone and warned of the consequences for conflict with Ukraine. The Hvylya source was also reported on by UNIAN.

Concerns were also raised about the possible threat to ethnic Crimean Tatars in the region, citing recent murders and communications with Tatar leadership. Erdogan’s call to Putin warned that if Russia invades Ukraine, and so-called ‘Crimean self-defense’ forces engage in violence against the Tatar minority, Turkey will be forced to close passage into the Black Sea to Russian ships.

Extranational protection of ethnic minorities was originally used as pretext for the Russian invasion of Crimea.

In a separate announcement, Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmet Davutoglu, said Moscow was pursing “self-willed policy” in the region and urged Russia to respect the territorial integrity of its neighboring countries. “The security of Tatars is the main strategic priority for Turkey,” he remarked. “Pandora’s box should not be opened. If you create a de facto situation in Ukraine, this will have a domino effect on all the countries in the Eurasia region,” Davutoglu said in televised remarks made the day of the Russian implemented referendum.

While the sea-port of Sevastopol has been lauded for its strategic importance as the only warm water port in the Black Sea Russia controls, restriction to it would be a self-made prison. Russian activity in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean is dependent on this passage to Crimea, and restriction would cut off arms shipments between Russia and the Syrian port in Tartus, as as well as lucrative arms deals with Egypt. As Amatzia Baram of Haaretz writes, “for Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Sevastopol port is indirectly the key to Syria and perhaps to Egypt and the entire Mediterranean in the future.”

  • beelza

I commend Turkey for it’s resolve commitment to peace in the Eur-Asian sub-continent. Finally a nation which will not be intimidated by aggressive, unlawful acts of Russia.

    • Some guy

A lot of this has to do with Turkey’s self interest. They don’t want to see break-away regions of different ethnicities become a precedent. Turkey battles with the Kurds who want to break away from Turkey. If the Crimeans can do it, why can’t they?

      • Cem Sipahi

well the same thing goes for tatarstan, saka republic, altai republic, chuvashia, tuva, bashkortistan, balkar-kabbardino, karachay-cherkessia and many other non-autonmous republics within the borders of russia. If the turkic people of these countries ask for a referandum for autonomy and independence, claim alliance with turkey, russia would lose more than half of its territory on top of losing all their ties with kazakhsitan, kyrgyzistan, uzbekistan, azerbaijan ad turkmenistan. putin plays a very dangerous game.

        • BERKE KHAN

Do not forget the Great GOKTURK nation created from the shores of the Black Sea to the Pacific, the Turkic peoples are living in that dream, if they break it up now they will never recreate it in an age of nations with nuclear weapons that will gobble up the pieces. Like China taking the East like they did with Tibet and the USA extending across from Alaska. It is better for the Turkic peoples to work from within Russia the country their ancestors created.

        • A Voice In The Wilderness

          you forgot to mention F**KedUpAstan

    • Barry Mole

What unlawful acts? Of the ones by the State Dept, Victoria Nuland, McCain, paramilitaries shooting protestors for the phony coups which led to looting the Ukraine’s gold reserves? That act? The one that put real Nazis in power in the Western Ukraine? This the same State Dept crap that is behind Syria and also what happened in Benghazi.

      • Francis Mella

The Entire Nazi crap is propaganda from Russia. Like most countries in Europe including Ukraine and Russia as well as in North America, there are groups or elements of the population that have extreme views. There are a small percentage of people in the Ukraine government that have shown to be part of this extreme but they are not “in power”. The individuals responsible for the snipers in Maidan have not yet been caught. It’s very easy to blame the US for this without any proof at all other than an altered phone recording. I don’t trust the US either however try to take a balanced view.

        • Pravda01

Right the real Nazis and successors of Nazi Germany sit in Washington D. C.. By the way the current self imposed PM of Ukraine was militarily educated in Israel.

          Get some facts.

          • Francis Mella

The PM may have been educated in Irasel but so what? That doesn’t support yours or Barry’s argument. Secondly the idea that the Nazi’s are in Washington now, as Nazi’s, is based on speculation and certainly not fact. Yes there were many Nazi’s that came over to the US but most of those “scientists” etc would have been followers of whatever political party was leading Germany at the time They were leading scientists good or bad. I think the negative in this world comes from greed and power. It doesn’t matter what these people are, left or right or whatever. They just don’t give a shit about anyone else!

          • evanlarkspur

So the heads of Ukraine are both nazis AND educated in Israel? Putinbots are so desperate to spread the hate they will say anything. And most of it just sets intelligent people laughing at how ridiculous they are. Btw, the nazis got less than one percent of the vote in Ukraine, a vote with higher voter turnout than any in the US in a long time.

God bless Russia for stepping in and putting their boots on the neck of the USA terrorist Nation.

Yaa… Because Russia really has the US by the balls in a region of the world that uses their hands as toilet paper… Most Americans didnt even know where crimea was last week… We will get back to our yoga, iphones, electricity and clean water in a week and at the end of the day russia will still be a nation of alcoholic homophones in terminal decline.

China came out against this illegal land grab. You see, china doesnt want to look like hippocrits when it comes to this because of tiawan.

        • Unite2014

No, China did come out publicly and officially supporting Russia. In fact, Russian action in Crimea supports Chinese claims to Taiwan. China also knows that NATO does now and will continue to, attempt the same actions in Chinese territories that they now do in Syria, Libya, Ukraine etc etc etc. The USA and NATO (and all their lap dogs) are collectively the biggest hypocrites in the history of humanity.

    • Chris Sky

… sorry. But Russia’s BEST friend is CHINA. Russia and China together could collapse the US currency almost over night… which is why Obama just pisses and moans, talks of “sanctions”… then ultimately just takes Michelle and the kids on a multi million dollar vacation, that you’ll be paying for!

      • spiderpaz

They couldn’t collapse the US without cutting their own throats

        • Chris Sky

LOL Really? The USA only enjoys all the perks it has because it’s curency is the “petrodollar”… China is now the world’s biggest oil producer… alll they have to do is stop buying oil in USD, and stop accumulating over 60 BILLION per month in USD. The US DOllar’s days are already numbered… China/Russia could turn what is set to hapen in a few years, in a few weeks. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the world is catching on that the USA will never be able to pay off it’s 16 trillion in debt… the DOLLAR (and US world super power status) is already dead. Americans are just being “lulled to sleep” rather than given STRAIGHT TALK

          • action

Where did you get that stat on china? US is poised to pass Saudi in global crude production. US has more proven hydrocarbon reserves than china and Russia with the resources to extract them. The US has enough natural gas alone to sustain itself for 200 years.

          • evader2014

US corporations are lying about natural gas supplies, in order to raise their stock prices.

          • Pravda01

Right the shale gas success in the US is a big economic lie. Imaging you burn 2 liter oil to get a drop out of the ground. The whole US was founded by genocide – ask the 120 million American Indians who vanished.

          • American

The American people are everybody’s people, Russia people, Turkish people, Europe’s people. Ext. Don’t any of you see that all u.s. citizens are from all over the world. I have friends who are Americans from all over the world and they all love it here. I think a lot of this talk is jealousy about the U.S.. All of are governments have made grave mistakes in the past. So I don’t know why any of you don’t think of the dirt your own country have on themselves. All’s the governments can do is try to learn from there mistakes and move forward for a more peaceful world. We Americans really truly care about people all over the world and give more support in suppressed countries than any other countries. Your bashing us so bad, why not look at north Korea, Somalia, Syria ?!?! They execute people for little or nothing with flamethrowers and dogs rape and other sick type of barbaric ways. No one seems to care about that, and not much for human rights any more. I’m glad to be American and I’m glad we do get in other peoples business when there people that are starved torcherd and suppressed. I hope we stay a super power for generations to come. So we can continue to help the people in need and that can’t help themselves. Including yourselves if needed.

          • Chris Sky

Apologies. I meant to write that China is now the world’s biggest oil CONSUMER not producer. AKA They BUY the most oil in the world, which is now alomst exclusively traded in US Dollars… IF China were to decide to buy their oil in anythign BUT US Dollars… the US dollar would be FINISHED and collapse almost over night. It doesn’t matter how many oil reserves the USA has! when the dollar loses huge chunks of it’s value and Americans see staple products like loaves of bread becoming too expensive to buy… then you will understand what I’m talking about! Americans have been convinced they are invincible… which wouldn’t be so amusing, if an intelligent person couldn’t already see that their empire has peaked and is on the DECLINE.

        • beowulf20

The US would go into a depression or a bad recession, but still would have all the resources and capability to recover.

If US does ok If Russia or China does is wrong, look we human will destroy the world sooner or later with Nuke so sad….

        • beowulf20

Russia would consider first that Turkey is NATO. I would have the say that if this did happen this is close to severity as the Cuban Missile Crisis.

        • evanlarkspur

Invading a neighboring country is an act of war. Perhaps Ukraine will rebuild their nuclear arsenal and blast Russia to bits. Too bad all the best military technology in Russia came from Ukraine, and Russia has made a mortal enemy of Ukraine now. Talk about clever!

    • Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu

Don’t kid yourself and get off that ‘happy’ pipe you’re smoking. Turkey would not dare close the Strait, aside violating a thousand international treaties that relate to international right of passage, Turkey would be toast in two ticks. That funny Turkish Sheik is only grandstanding and seeking political relevance that will fix his domestic political slide and soiled reputation at home and abroad. Tayyip Erdogan is your classical clown; a buffoon prankster.

  • Rascalndear

Bravo Turkey! That’s the difference between being in NATO and being snubbed by NATO (Ukraine). I hope the West is learning some serious long-term lessons from this. • beelza

You are incorrect sir, and naive. NATO has a very well equipped and trained standing army of 3.2 million, with 800k in reserves. Russia’s standing army hovers around 750k, with maybe 1 million reserves. In addition to American troops loaned to NATO, the Americans have their standing army at 1.4 million. So gets deal in facts here.

Maybe so, but the chronic drunks in the Russian military can only function heroicly when running on cheap alcohol and are only a threat when they greatly outnumber their opponents. The old men and kids defending Berlin at the end of WWII had about three times less losses than the USSR during the battle of Berlin. Since then Russians have only raised their alcohol consumption. Soon we’ll no longer mention the ‘Russian Army’ but rather ‘Korsakov’s Army’.

Worried they might get “aspirations of self-determination” of their own? Can’t allow any referenums there, can he? Blocking an international strait is act of war. US ships could be blockaded also, on either end. Or is the real idea here to split the Russian Black Sea fleet between Tartus and Sevastopol, preventing resupply of aid to Syria, which is about to experience increased US “liberation” as its diversion from ineptness in Crimea. Erdogan needs to read Guns of August, and remember how much territory Turkey lost in WW1. Beter to shut up and sit on the sidelines before he bites off more than he can chew. Turkey Warns Russia it Will
    Blockade Bosphorus if Violence Occurs

    According to diplomatic
sources, Turkey has threatened Russia with a blockade of the
    Bosphorus Strait

    The threat
to close the Bosphorus to Russia comes from a report
    by Hvylya, citing a Turkish
diplomatic source. According to the source, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip
Erdogan yesterday spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the phone and
warned of the consequences for conflict with Ukraine. The Hvylya source was
    also reported on by UNIAN.

    Concerns
were also raised about the possible threat to ethnic Crimean Tatars in the
region, citing recent murders and communications with Tatar leadership.
Erdogan’s call to Putin warned that if Russia invades Ukraine, and so-called
‘Crimean self-defense’ forces engage in violence against the Tatar minority,
Turkey will be forced to close passage into the Black Sea to Russian ships.

    Extranational
protection of ethnic minorities was originally used as pretext for the Russian
    invasion of Crimea.

    In a
separate announcement, Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmet
Davutoglu, said Moscow was pursing “self-willed
policy” in the region and urged Russia to respect the territorial integrity of
its neighboring countries. ”The security of Tatars is the main strategic
priority for Turkey,” he remarked. ”Pandora’s box should not be opened. If
you create a de facto situation in Ukraine, this will have a domino effect on
all the countries in the Eurasia region,” Davutoglu said
in televised remarks made the day of the Russian implemented referendum.

    While the
sea-port of Sevastopol has been lauded for its strategic importance as the only
warm water port in the Black Sea Russia controls, restriction to it would be a
self-made prison. Russian activity in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean is
dependent on this passage to Crimea, and restriction would cut off arms
shipments between Russia and the Syrian port in Tartus, as as well as lucrative
arms deals with Egypt. As Amatzia Baram of Haaretz writes, “for Russian
President Vladimir Putin, the Sevastopol port is indirectly the key to Syria
and perhaps to Egypt and the entire Mediterranean in the future.”

Turkey has the legal authority to regulate any warships, in peace or war, that wish to navigate the Bosphuros Straight. The below agreement still stands today and Russia is a signatory. The Converntion also grants Turkey to enforce the Convention by whatever means they deem necessary. So you see, Turkey is not just making idle and fantastic threats as some have suggested.

The Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits is a 1936 agreement .

Then Russia should arm the Kurdish people in Turkey and also rearm Syria. The Turks must learn once their famous Istanbul is shelled and destroyed nobody will compensate.

Turkey committed to peace? Are you serious beelza? Turkey has problems with all its neighbors and has invaded Cyprus. I would hate to see if Turkey wasn’t interested in peace how it would act.

Boo Yaa. Was celebrating my coup, till noticed the date was 3/17, but that was when I questioned Klitschko, Hrytsenko, and others about it- the CLOSE the BOSPHORUS petition was online from March 5 (first to the White House), brought it up with Mustafa Jemeliev (see my YT CMC video), and just called him again on it a few days ago to urge another chat with his friend Erdogan- he was in Vienna. Russia helpfully banned the famous Tatar spiritual leader and Ukr Rada MP (helped bring the Tatars back from Stalinist exile) from Russia for 5 years- last time he tried to cross border to Crimea, 3000 Tatars came to rally and protest. To emphasize Russian thuggery, Poland is giving Mustafa a cool EU 1 mil award in June. Gotta love a guy who ruefully admits, “I learned English in prison.”
